How Hard Water Affects Pressure Washing

What is hard water?

Water is considered “hard” when it contains a high concentration of minerals – largely calcium and magnesium.

Many industrial and domestic water users are concerned about the hardness of water. When hard water is heated, such as in a pressure washer, solid deposits of “lime scale” can form and cause blockage to you pressure washer.

Hard water also impedes the effectiveness of your detergents. By reacting with the chemicals in your soap it will prevent it from foaming and dissolving dirt and grime.

The area you are cleaning will be covered by a layer of lime buildup and glass, shiny surfaces will show water spots.

Hard water can reduce the life of equipment, raise the cost of heating the water and require more detergents to effectively get the job done.

What can be done about hard water?

To unclog the pipes of your pressure washer you will need to have it heater coil cleaned out. The frequency of descaling your pressure washer depends on the hardness of your water and how often you use your pressure washer.

It may be advisable to install a water softening system, which will greatly reduce scale buildup in your pressure washer system as well as increase the effectiveness of your detergents.
